What Happens at a Family Constellation Circle? In-Person vs Online Guide

If you've seen our Family Constellation events on Vancouver Island and wondered "what happens at family constellation circle " - you are not alone. It's one of the most searched questions about this work.
Family Constellation is not traditional talk therapy. It's a short-term group intervention aiming to help you better understand and then change conflictive experiences within a social system, like your family.[1]
Developed by Bert Hellinger, the method explores hidden family dynamics and entanglements that may show up as relationship patterns, anxiety, or feeling stuck.[2]
At Sekhmet Healing, we host both In-Person Family Constellation Circles and Come Heal Your Family System online events. Here's exactly what to expect.
1. How a Group Workshop Actually Works
Family Constellation therapy is typically conducted in a group setting, though it can also be done one-to-one.[3]
After talking briefly with the facilitator, the client is asked to choose people from the group to represent certain family members who are then set up intuitively in what is called a "constellation".[4]
In practice, it looks like this:
a) You share an intention: As the seeker (the person whose family is being explored), you briefly describe the issue. For example: "I keep repeating the same relationship pattern" or "I feel disconnected from my mother."
b) You choose representatives: You choose strangers from the circle to represent members of your family - mother, father, sibling, even a grandparent or an excluded family member.
c) The constellation is set up: The representatives are placed in the room in relation to each other. The therapist guides posture, position and words, though sometimes there is minimal talking.[5]
d) The field reveals the dynamic: Representatives often report bodily sensations and emotions that mirror the family system - without knowing your story. This is the part that feels different from psychodrama. You can observe interactions from the side or interact directly with your relatives in the constellation.[6]
e) Movement toward resolution: The facilitator may invite healing sentences, new positions, or inclusion of excluded members to restore belonging and order.
You don't need to bring your actual family. Strangers act as stand-ins.
2. What Are Your Two Roles in the Circle?
In every circle, you have two options:
As a Seeker (Hot Seat / Issue Holder):You get 45-60 minutes focused on your family system. This is for when you have a specific question you want clarity on. Learn more about the benefits on our Family Constellation service page.
As a Representative or Observing Participant:You stand in for someone else's family member. Many people report this is profoundly healing for their own system too. Research on constellation seminars includes both active participants and observing participants, and both groups showed benefits.[7]
You can attend our In-Person Circle on Vancouver Island just as a representative - no pressure to have your own constellation.
3. In-Person vs Online: What's Different?
At Sekhmet Healing, we offer both.
In-Person Circle - Vancouver Island:
Held in a held, confidential space
Full body experience - you feel the field in 3D space
Best for: Deep entanglements, grief, generational trauma work
You can book via Book Online
Online Circle - Come Heal Your Family System:
Conducted on Zoom, same structure, representatives appear on screen
You can participate from home, equally effective for many issues
Best for: Accessibility, follow-up work, if you live off-island

Both formats use role-playing to reveal underlying family dynamics influencing a person's life. The online field works surprisingly well.[8]
4. Is Family Constellation Effective? What Research Says
This is an important question we get from our About Me page visitors.
A 2021 systematic review published in Family Process analyzed 12 studies (568 participants) on family/systemic constellation therapy. The researchers searched PsycINFO, Embase, MEDLINE, and other major databases up to April 2020.
Their findings:
Out of 12 studies, nine showed statistically significant improvement post-intervention. The meta-analysis indicated a moderate effect (Hedges' g of 0.531) for general psychopathology.[9]
In simpler terms: The data accumulated to date points in the direction that family constellation therapy is an effective intervention with significant mental health benefits in the general population; however, the quantity and overall quality of the evidence is low.[10]
Other randomized controlled trials on family constellation seminars (208 adults, general population) found improvements in belonging, autonomy, and confidence in personal social systems after a 3-day seminar.[11]
What it can help with: Research and clinical reports suggest it can be particularly beneficial for those working through childhood trauma, death of a relative, relationship patterns, depression and anxiety, and feelings of stigma.[12]
What to consider: Constellations can be intense and bring up strong feelings. Clients should ensure they feel comfortable with their therapist and have a self-care plan in place. At Sekhmet Healing, we offer integration support via our Healing Your Path Package (6 x 1.5hr sessions).[13]
5. How to Prepare for Your First Circle
No need to prepare your family tree in detail - just know basic facts.
Come with a clear intention, not a whole life story.
You can watch first: Many newcomers attend once as representative before being a seeker.
Aftercare: Plan quiet time after. Our Contact page has integration resources.
Ready to Experience It?
If you want to break dysfunctional patterns you learned from your family of origin, or understand what you bring to relationships, a circle is a direct way to see the pattern live.[14]
